The MOMAC GROUP begun its activity in 1991. First research was carried out at the Department of Geophysics and Meteorology of the Complutense University (Madrid, Spain), currenty named Department of Earth Physics and Astrophysics. Out of the four members at the time group was made, three remain nowadays.

In 1993, a first version of an original limited area numerical 3D model of the atmosphere was completed. It was named as PROMES "Spanish acronym for MESoscale PROgnostic". It's considered as the only 3D atmospheric numerical model entirely developed by Spanish researchers, so far. It has been in the core of the international regional climate modelling (RCMs) initiatives, as recently stated by Filippo Giorgi, the father of RCMs, on his 2019 review paper "Thirty Years of Regional Climate Modeling".

The model has been continuously improved with more efficient numerical schemes and more comprehensive physical parameterizations. The latest versions of PROMES model applied for weather forecasting shows skill-scores comparable to most of mesoscale models used by the European Meteorological Institutes.

Since 1994 MOMAC has been also dedicated to the development and up-dating of a version of PROMES model for performing regional climate and climate change simulations. A complex parameterization of land surface processes has been implemented in the model, along with new radiation and cloud convection schemes. The computer code was at first optimized for being efficiently run in vectorial main frame computers and lastly in massive parallel processors supercomputers. 

In 2001 MOMAC was part of the start of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Biochemistry, at the University of Castilla-La Mancha (Toledo, Spain). It belongs to the Environmental Sciences Department and the Institute of Environmental Sciences (ICAM).
