Project summary
The catalyst-based chemical industry is evolving towards electrification and reduced third-party dependence on metals and fossil fuels. In this context, the EU-funded FIREFLY project will bring together 16 partners to develop electrically driven technologies for metal recycling from spent, waste and off-specification catalysts available in Europe. This includes an experimental, modelling, optimisation and engineering approach, as well as the efficient integration of renewable electricity. Artificial intelligence tools for predicting best-processing routes will boost the competitiveness of the process. FIREFLY will also develop production methods for (electro)catalysts for innovative (electro)chemical processes, as sustainable alternatives to traditional production routes associated with intensive operating conditions, high greenhouse gas emissions and lack of circularity.
