An international competition for structural design has awarded the ingenuity of students from the Civil Engineering School

15/02/2018

This week in Madrid, the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering held the seminar "From structural design to design of structures" which was attended by students from the Civil Engineering School at the University of Castilla-La Mancha(UCLM). In this setting, a competition was held in which the participants had to show their ingenuity for creative structural design. Here, students at the Ciudad Real campus carried off the prize for three out of the four categories there were.

Students from the Higher Technical School of Civil Engineering at the University of Castilla-La Mancha have won prizes in three out of four categories at the I International Competition for Table-Like 3D Structures, a competition held in Madrid in the framework of the seminar "From Structural Design to Design of Structures" which challenged Civil Engineering and Architecture students and young designers to show how talented they were for designing a structure (table-type) from wood, balsa or Knex pieces, with a hollow inside equivalent to a cube with 50 centimetre sides and whose maximum dimensions do not exceed the volume of a one-metre high cylinder with an 80-centimetre base.

In the category "Greatest weight supported without considering the weight of the structure", Samuel Rubio, María Sobrino and Fernando Calderón, Master’s students in Civil Engineering at the UCLM were declared victors. In the category, "Best design" , the group made up of second year students in Civil Engineering, Sara Corral, Maria Luisa Peces and Carlos Sanchez took the prize; while Fernando Calderon and Samuel Rubio shared the prize in the category "Students with best predictions". The prize in the category, "Best structural weight to supported load relationship" was won by a group of students from the University of San Pablo, CEU (University Studies Centre).

The congress and competition was organized by the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering, in order to promote structural design by means of different creative approaches. Twenty students from the UCLM School of Civil Engineering also attended, accompanied by professor Rocio Porras. They enjoyed the speeches made by highly acclaimed professionals and professors of structures calculation such as Jorge and Alejandro Bernabéu, Toni Kotnik and Javier Materola.

The congress was, according to professor Rocio Porras, an enriching experience for student training and fostered harmony among students from different academic years. Moreover, the prizes carried away at the international competition mean "recognition of the work carried out in structural design and Knex pieces assembly by the students and professors of the UCLM School of Civil Engineering".
