Twenty-five UCLM researchers will disseminate knowledge in bars around Castilla-La Mancha during the Pint of Science festival

A total of twenty-five professors and researchers from the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) will participate in the next edition of the Pint of Science" festival for science communication, explaining scientific knowledge in a digestible manner around bars in Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Toledo, Talavera de la Reina and Miguelturra.

The University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) will, for the third time running, participate in the "Pint of Science" international festival for science communication, which will be held between Monday and Wednesday next week at entertainment venues around the world, and which will also take place in Albacete, Ciudad Real,Cuenca, Toledo, Talavera de la Reina (Toledo) and Miguelturra (Ciudad Real). A total of twenty-five professors and researchers from the UCLM will share their knowledge with those attending these talks, the aim of which is to to make science, technology, engineering, humanities, art and the social sciences more accessible to the general public, and the special attraction of these conferences is they will be held in a laid-back bar atmosphere.

Apart from the researchers, the University of Castilla-La Mancha collaborated with the festival sponsoring it from the Vice-chancellor´s office for Research and Scientific Policy and the Scientific Culture and Dissemination Unit on UCLM sites. Also sponsoring the event are the Scientific and Technological Park of Castilla-La Mancha and Precipita, the collective micro finance platform spearheaded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT).

Pint Of Science Albacete #Pint19ALB

The Albacete venue for Pint Of Science is the St. Patrick’s Irish Pub, which will kick off with talks given by the UCLM professors, Cristina Romero González and Virgilio Gómez Rubio. The former will talk about everyday artificial intelligence, whilst the latter will review some of the immense number of mathematical applications there are, from making noise maps, to analysing cancer mortality rates. On the 21st of May, professor María del Carmen Alarcón del Amo from the University of Murcia and Victor Raúl López Ruiz from the University of Castilla-La Mancha will give speeches about new ways of brand-customer relationships and happiness. Another two UCLM professors, will bring the event to a close on Wednesday. Rosario Sabariegos Jareño will talk about comic strips as a support for dissemination and María Elena Caminos Benito, will discuss neurodegeneration of the retina. Albacete Pint of Science will collaborate with the Higher School of Computer Science, Popular Libros (Popular Books), the Albacete Association of Young Researchers and the Faculty of Economic and Business Studies.
Pint Of Science Ciudad Real #Pint19CIR
The Living Room bar will be venue to the Ciudad Real Pint Of Science , which will kick off on the 20th May with a talk by Juan Diego Gutiérrez, from the physiotherapy clinic, CEFIMA; Marián García, from the chemist, García, will give a talk entitled “Más gachas y menos porridge”("More mush and less porridge"); and Guillermo Martínez, head of the Ayúdame3D project, will explain this initiative that makes 3D-printed arms for those without resources anywhere in the world. The day after, three UCLM professors will give speeches. Rafael Ubaldo Gosálvez Rey, will talk about volcanism in the Campo de Calatrava; Juan Ramón Peinado Mena, will explain the cell cooperation mechanisms in different organs and tissues; and Leticia del Pozo Ruiz, will give a speech entitled “Publicidad, feminismo y estereotipos”/"Advertising, feminism and stereotypes". To finish off, on Wednesday the UCLM professors, Coral Calero Muñoz and Alicia Martínez González will discuss pollutants given off by using software and the relationship mathematics has with health, respectively; and Daniel Pérez Grande, from ienai Space will enlighten us on the most bizarre uses for rockets. ADICIPEC, the House of Science, the SAC consortium and the Royal Society of Chemistry will also collaborate at Pint of Science, Ciudad Real.

Pint Of Science Cuenca #Pint19CUE
The Cuenca Auditorium Bar will play host to the first Pint Of Science in Cuenca, which will be presented with the attractive title “Un croata, un americano y un manchego se van de ferias”/"A Croat, an American and a Manchego go to the fairs" and will be given by the UCLM researchers, César Sánchez Meléndez and Samuel Quintana Gómez. On Tuesday, the 21st, we go to the café at the Polytechnic School to listen to other two UCLM professors, José María Herranz de la Casa and Pavel Sidorenko Bautista. They will give speeches on the potential of virtual reality and immersive multimedia formats. On Wednesday we will round off the event at Café Hispano with the UCLM professor, Carmen Mota Utanda, and her views on the rivalry between archaeologists and architects. The city council is collaborating with Pint Of Science Cuenca.

Pint Of Science Toledo #Pint19TOL
The first port of call for the Toledo science communication festival is the restaurant, Recaredo, and the first two “pinters”/" will be the UCLM professor, Susana Seseña Prieto, and, Manuela Fernández Álvarez from the University Complutense de Madrid, with a session dedicated to discovering new antibiotics and the food of the future. On Tuesday, at Los Clásicos, we will have the opportunity to listen to a talk by Manuel Nieto Díaz, from the National Hospital for Paraplegics, about the medical uses (or non uses) of horns; and ,Juan Avendaña Coy, from the UCLM, will give a talk entitled "Dolor y Placebo, emborracharse Sin"/"Pain and placebo, get drunk without alcohol”. Lastly, on Wednesday the 22nd at Buca Bar, César Sánchez Meléndez will give a talk again, although this time he will dedicate his monologue to the great inventor (and actress) Hedy Lamarr. Cerrará Lucas Pérez García, from the University Complutense, will bring the event to a close, with an explanation about the “ByAxon” project, the aim of which is to manufacture a device capable of “reconnecting” neurons. In Pint of Science, Toledo, which also provides all speeches in sign language, Ciencia a la Carta and Fundación Soliss, also collaborate.

Pint Of Science Talavera de la Reina #Pint19TAL
There is no better meeting point for Pint Of Science in Talavera than the Big Bang bar, which will kick off on the 20th of May with an interesting talk by UCLM professor, Félix Marcos Tejedor, on the value of nails as a tool for making diagnostics; and engineer, Antonio Pérez Verde, will talk about the existence of water on Mars and cultivating possibilities on the red planet. Other two researchers from the University of Castilla-La Mancha will take over on Tuesday, the 21st. María José Ruiz García will aim to raise awareness among the general public about the benefits of chemistry; while Cristina Pintado Losa will talk about the relationship there is between what we eat and the mechanisms of the brain reward system. The last session of the Talavera festival includes speeches by Jesús Gil-Muñoz, from the Council of Education; Sergio de la Llave Muñoz, from UNED; and Javier Carmona, from the Institute of Geosciences, CSIC. The Faculty of health sciences, UNED, Ciencia a la Carta, the Ebora brewery and Geodiver will also collaborate at Pint of Science in Talavera.

Pint Of Science Miguelturra #Pint19MGT
The Ciudad Real locality, Miguelturra, has joined the regional Pint Of Science and Los Arcos restaurant will play host to three conferences dedicated to emphatic neuroscience, artificial intelligence and what makes us human. In the first one, on Monday, the 20th of May, the UCLM researcher, Javier Frontiñán Rubio, will participate in the “Neurociencia Ficción”/"Neuroscience Fiction" conference; and Alicia González Martínez, researcher at the Princesa University Hospital will talk about so-called mirror neurons. On Tuesday, Ricardo Muñoz Castellanos, also from the UCLM, will give a conference about artificial intelligence; and on Wednesday, 21st, his colleague Francisco Javier Sancho Bielsa, will talk about somesthesia, that is, bodily sensation. Pint of Science, Miguelturra will close with a performance by the performing arts group, Ojos Venecia, with live music, dance and poetry.
