For the first time in its history, the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) has been incorporated to the third edition of the major universities ranking in the United States (US News), being positioned 911 worldwide. Only 38 universities have been selected within the 74 Spanish participating institutions. By subject, the regional university reaches the 199th position in engineering worldwide, being the seventh Spanish university in this field.
US News has reinforced the ranking methodology in 2017 to determine a global university index based on 12 indicators, which are integrated with 25% weight for reputation surveys to 50,000 experts and 75% for production, impact, and internationalization of the scientific publications of each institution.
The UCLM obtains the best global positions in bibliometric indicators, especially those related to scientific production such as publications in congresses (526), books (630) and magazines (647). On the contrary, the indicators to improve are given by those related to international collaboration (1,110) and highly cited articles (1,090).
In the Engineering field, the UCLM is ranked 199th and 7th worldwide and in Spain respectively. In this field, which covers areas such as Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Building, Chemical and Energy Engineering, as well as mathematical and statistical methods related to these fields, the UCLM is only surpassed by the three major polytechnic Spanish universities and those generalist universities with a tradition in Engineering such as Seville, Zaragoza and Autónoma de Barcelona.
In the words of the vice chancellor of Economy and Planning, Manuel Villasalero, “the results of this ranking show the strength of the UCLM in the areas known as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), identified as those which will have the highest proportion of qualified jobs in the future. ”
Julián Garde, vice chancellor of Research and Scientific Policy highlighted that “once more, the results of this ranking suggest that the researchers linked to the field of Engineering and related subjects of the UCLM stand out in the international scene”.
