UCLM presents its supercomputing service

19/04/2017

The University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) presents its supercomputing service within a conference targeted at researchers in all campuses, and also promotes interaction with the Spanish Supercomputing Network. The conference, organised by the General Secretariat and Vice-rectorate for Scientific Policy and Research, has been transmitted by videoconference from Toledo to other campuses.

General secretary, Crescencio Bravo, and the vice-rector for Scientific Policy and Research, Julián Garde, welcomed the participants to the conference, which also involved the director of the Technology and Communications department (TIC), Andrés Prado, and the head of user support of Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS), David Vicente.

Firstly, the Supercomputing Service of the UCLM was presented, which allows users to access resources or scientific computation or compute-intensive using server infrastructures and corporate communications. The purpose of this service is to organise computing resources making easier the access to them, while improving their use, and carrying out activities to optimise maintenance and investment.

As has been highlighted in the presentation, this service can be used by all members of the university community and people involved professionally, free of charge, who need to perform tasks of scientific computing in their job performance.

Currently, the service has more than 230 registered users exceeding 16.3 million working hours. The departments with the highest annual activity are the Environmental Science, Information Systems, Physical Chemistry, Applied Mechanics and Project Engineering, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, although they are also assigned the Nursing, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy, Spanish and international economy, Econometrics and History of Economic Institutions or Mathematics, among others.

In the second part of the conference, David Vincent, who also coordinates user support in the Spanish Supercomputing Network (Red Española de Supercomputación, RES), explained what resources are available and how to access them. In addition to this, he presented the European supercomputing infrastructure, which is also free for users. Finally, the pooling of the lines of work developed by researchers at UCLM was held in order to exploit synergies and to establish and strengthen collaboration.
