Knowledge transfer

The COMES group offers companies and institutions a range of technology transfer services based on our expertise in continuum mechanics, materials characterization, and advanced simulation. Below is a description of the main general services available:

  1. Mechanical testing and materials characterization
    • Execution of uniaxial, biaxial, and triaxial tests (tension, compression, shear, and bending) on metals, polymers, and composites.
    • Measurement of hardness, toughness (Charpy), wear resistance (tribometry), density (pycnometry), and thermogravimetric properties (TGA/DSC).
    • Use of advanced techniques such as Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and fiber optic sensors for real-time strain monitoring.
  2. Consulting and numerical modeling (FEM/XFEM)
    • Development of finite element models to analyze nonlinear behavior, progressive damage, and crack propagation in metallic and composite structures.
    • Support in structural design optimization, adhesive joint validation, and failure tolerance analysis.
    • Implementation of XFEM methodologies for crack propagation simulation under multiaxial testing.
  3. Processing and prototype manufacturing
    • Additive manufacturing services (3D printing of high-temperature polymers and metals) for rapid prototyping and pilot testing.
    • Powder metallurgy and thermal treatments (in muffle and vacuum furnaces) for the development of new materials.
    • Application of concentrated solar energy technology (Fresnel lens) for sustainable thermal treatments on metals and composite components.
  4. Test method development and standardization
    • Design and implementation of advanced biaxial tension–compression test protocols to determine pure shear properties in composite materials (BISHEAR project).
    • Preparation of technical documents and reference standards (UNE) for specialized testing in the aerospace and wind energy sectors.
    • Validation and calibration of anti-buckling fixtures and custom test tooling.
  5. Training and technology transfer
    • Custom courses and workshops on computational mechanics, FEM simulation, and experimental characterization methods.
    • Support to R&D departments in integrating simulation and testing techniques into their product development lines.
    • Collaboration in educational innovation projects (FORMATING) and technical outreach activities.
  6. Support for collaborative projects and funding opportunities
    • Guidance in preparing proposals for national and international calls (H2020, CDTI, regional programs).
    • Management of collaboration agreements (Art. 83), licenses for patents and utility models developed by the group.
    • Participation in industry-academia consortia for the development of emerging technologies in composites, additive manufacturing, and renewable energies.
