General Information

The Doctoral Program in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is integrated by several centers of the UCLM, combining personal and material resources to provide an academic offer the highest quality and guarantee. The participating centers are the following:

The participating centers, with a long tradition in research, have in common their focus on agricultural and environmental issues, with applied biology as a common basic element and the interaction of their different fields of knowledge with the environment. The research lines of the program integrate, complementing each other, contents related to agricultural production, forestry production, animal science and health, ecology, study of global change, aerobiology, biodiversity, biotechnology and genetics or engineering.

As a result of the participation of the different centers, their professors and the research lines offer a broad doctoral program, integrating complementary knowledge, multidisciplinary and of reference in environment and agricultural production systems, focused on the so-called "green engineering" and on the deep knowledge of biological systems and their interactions.

Furthermore, the participation of researchers from different institutions that will collaborate in the program through different collaboration agreements signed for this purpose. Among them, The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) can be highlighted due to its scientific importance. There is also collaboration with the agricultural research and experimentation centers of the Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha, making the program the agricultural reference for regional research. Likewise, different researchers and research groups of the program collaborate with the National Institute of Agricultural and Food Research and Technology (INIA).

The annual enrolement cost depends on the aplicable fees, aprobed by the Regional Government in Castilla-La Mancha. Click here to know the corresponding to the current academic year.

Complementary training activities

CROSS-CUTTING TRAINING ACTIVITIES ORGANIZED BY THE INTERNATIONAL DOCTORAL SCHOOL.

The International Doctoral School (EID-UCLM) organizes cross-disciplinary training courses with the aim of offering the doctorate students’ complementary training activities to his or her activity as a researcher. The offered activities can be taught through their doctoral studies. To check for more information:
http://blog.uclm.es/eid/alumnos-y-profesores/formacion-transversal-de-doctorado/

EACH ACADEMIC YEAR INCLUDES INFORMATION ABOUT THE COURSES, SEMINARS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES OFFERED BY THE DOCTORAL PROGRAM ITSELF EVALUABLE TRAINING ACTIVITIES IN THE DOCTORAL PROGRAM IN AGRICULTURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES IN AGRICULTURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES.

ACTIVITY

DESCRIPTION

PARTICIPATION IN SEMINARS AND CONFERENCES (5h)

The doctoral student must participate in a seminar or conference of a general nature on scientific activity and doctoral studies or focused on the objectives of his or her thesis topic. As an example, the attendance at specific conferences organized by the UCLM is mentioned.

Seminars or conferences on topics of interest may also be organized by one of the groups integrated in the Program, encouraging the participation of doctoral students. In this sense, it has been common for some of the doctoral programs included in this proposal (or related research Masters, for example, the Master in Agricultural Science and Engineering) to hold conferences on research and the preparation of research projects, incorporating these activities into the proposed program.

The preferential moment of development of this activity will be at the beginning of their stay in the Doctoral Program, if possible, in the first year, both for full-time and part-time students. On the other hand, taking into account the usual celebration of some of the possible Conferences in which the student may participate, it will mostly take place in the first four-month period.

PRESENTATION OF RESULTS (2h)

The presentation and disclosure of the results from the research is one of the abilities that must be acquired by the doctoral student. The doctoral students will have to expose their results periodically through seminars organized by the research groups or the participating institutions where they develop their research activity.

The development of this activity requires to have advanced in the approach and/or elaboration of the Doctoral Thesis, therefore, it is proposed for the second semester of each of the years in which the student remains in the Doctoral Program. The first year will focus on the contents and scientific approaches and challenges of the thesis topic and the following years, depending on the evolution of the experimental work, on the description and analysis of the results achieved and their implications (even if they are partial). This structure will be maintained for full-time and part-time students, who must present their results during the whole time they remain linked to the Program.

PRESENTATION OF RESULTS IN CONGRESSES (5h)

Presentation of the results in national or international congresses as a speaker (poster or oral presentation) presenting the partial obtained results. The language of the activity will be the language of the congress attended, increasingly and preferably in a language relevant to the scientific field, such as English.

The moment to carry out this activity will be, in general, from the second year of permanence in the Program, establishing it in a concrete way according to the results obtained in the realization of the Thesis and the objectives of the Congress in which the work is presented. Therefore, the most usual planning will be the second or third year for full-time students and the third year for part-time students.

MOBILITY (480h)

Short-term stays in national or foreign research centers will be encouraged. Special attention will be given to the promotion of research stays in foreign centers with the intention of obtaining the International Doctorate Mention. In the latter case, and in accordance with Article 20 of the UCLM Doctoral Regulations, the doctoral student must carry out a minimum stay of three months outside Spain (or periods of at least one month's duration totaling three months) in a higher education institution or research center of prestige, studying or carrying out research work.

Access and admision

The minimum legal access requirements for admission to any type of doctoral programs are specified in the section "Access for new doctoral students" in this link.

Recommended Admission Profile for the Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Program.

The admission profile will consider the Program's focus on agrarian and environmental issues, with applied biology as a basic common element and the interaction of its different fields of knowledge with the environment. In each of the cases and lines of research of the program are integrated, complementing each other, own contents of agricultural production, forestry production, animal production and health, ecology, study of global change, aerobiology, biodiversity, biotechnology and genetics or engineering. The PhD program is broad, integrating complementary knowledge, multidisciplinary and a reference in environment and agricultural production systems, focused on the so-called "green engineering" and on the deep knowledge of biological systems and their interactions. Among the degrees, taught at the UCLM or at other universities, which, fulfilling the above requirements, fit the recommended entry profile (although not exclusive), are:

In addition, a good command of the languages most used in the scientific field of the Program is recommended, specifically English, for which a basic B1 level is recommended.

The training complements that are established will be mainly focused on taking some of the subjects or thematic modules of one of the University Master's Degrees that give direct access.

Places offered: 30.

SPECIFIC SELECTION CRITERIA

The specific criteria for students' selection are the following (according to what is stablished in point 3.2 of the Report):

  1. The suitability of the studies that allow access to the third cycle, in relation to the object of research on which he/she wishes to prepare his/her doctoral thesis. For this purpose, the training and academic record will be evaluated, especially the degrees with competences and knowledge related to the areas of specialization of the Doctoral Program. Weight: 60%.

  2. Applicant's Curriculum Vitae: Professional and research experience, especially in activities related to the areas of specialization of the Doctoral Program. Weight: 10%

  3. Motivation, expressed in a letter of interest, for pursuing the Doctoral Program, and the specific subject matter on which he/she would like to conduct research if admitted. The commitment of interest and the proposed topic of the doctoral thesis will be evaluated, mainly taking into account its integration in the lines of research of the program and the existence, at any given time, of the capacity for its development. Weight: 20%.

  4. Demonstrate, by any officially recognized means, that they have sufficient knowledge of English, or one of the usual languages for scientific communication in their field of knowledge, and Spanish (if applicable) to enable them to approach the development of the Program without difficulty. Weight: 10%.

  5. In the case of part-time students, the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program will consider the circumstances and the extent to which they affect the completion of their doctoral thesis. On the other hand, in the case of part-time students, the admission criteria will be analogous to those of the rest of the students (points 1 to 4). These students may change to full-time status if, in the opinion of the committee, they meet the requirements for full-time students in terms of training activities.

RULES FOR THE SUBMISSION OF THESES BY ARTICLE COMPENDIUM.

For the presentation of the doctoral thesis as a compendium of articles referred to in Article 13.2 of the Regulations for Doctoral Studies of the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM), the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, in accordance with the requirements approved by the International Doctoral School of the UCLM, has agreed that the following minimum requirements must be met:

  • The document must have at least three articles published (or definitively accepted for publication) in journals with impact index.

  • No more than five years must have elapsed between the publication of the first and the last article and at least one of the articles must have been published with the student already enrolled in the corresponding PhD program.

  • The Director/Directors of the thesis must be co-authors in at least the last of the published papers.

  • The articles can only be used for a single thesis and therefore this will be stated by the rest of the non-doctoral co-authors in a letter of "renunciation" to use these articles to prepare other theses, which must be attached to the sections that comprise the Doctoral Thesis.

  • The three articles must be published in a journal that, within the category, is positioned at least in the second quartile (JCR).

  • The doctoral student must be the first author of the three articles.

The thesis will have to count with at least, these sections:

  • Summary.

  • Introduction (this section must explain the problematic studied in the work of the doctorate).

  • Justification.

  • Hypothesis and Objectives.

  • Work plan or methodology.

  • Results (this section will be composed of at least the three articles published (or definitively accepted for publication) as published in the respective journals and may also include others in the format of a scientific article in the process of revision or writing. All the papers must have scientific value by themselves and, at the same time, must be part of the same line of research).

  • General Discussion.

  • Conclusions.

  • Bibliography.

In order to submit a thesis by compendium of articles, the doctoral student will submit an application to the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences in which he/she must indicate the references and indications of quality of the publications that he/she plans to incorporate into the thesis, as well as a copy of the same. The Academic Committee will evaluate, according to its competences, the fulfillment of the above requirements, and will issue the corresponding authorization or a reasoned denial of the same. After the authorization and once the elaboration of the doctoral thesis has been completed, the doctoral student will request the previous evaluation of the thesis in accordance with the general regulations for the presentation of doctoral theses.

It is reminded that this option of presenting the thesis as a compendium of articles must be defended before a tribunal and that it is one more possibility available to doctoral students for the structuring and presentation of the doctoral thesis. Other "traditional" formats of thesis structure and presentation are possible.

AGREEMENT FOR THE PROPOSAL OF EXPERTS FOR THE PRE-REVIEW AND THE TRIBUNAL TO EVALUATE THE DOCTORAL THESIS IN THE DOCTORAL PROGRAM IN AGRICULTURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES

This agreement of the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences of the University of Castilla-La Mancha is developed under the protection of Royal Decree 99/2011, of January 28, which regulates the official teachings of doctorate, and the provisions of the Regulations of Doctoral Studies of the University of Castilla-La Mancha (approved by the Governing Council of November 20, 2012).

Its main objective is to define the criteria for the realization of the proposal of experts for the previous review and the tribunal that must evaluate the Doctoral Thesis by the Academic Commission, based on the stipulations of Article 4.5.g. of the Regulations of the Doctoral Studies of the University of Castilla-La Mancha.

Both the experts for the pre-evaluation and the proposed members for the composition of the tribunal (titular and alternate) shall comply with the research experience criteria stated in the regulation. They must also be experts related to the subject matter of the Thesis. Under no circumstances may those who have been Tutor, Director or co-director of the Thesis to be evaluated act as previous evaluators or members of the examining board.

It is reminded that, according to the regulations to that effect, the previous evaluators of the doctoral thesis must be two. The tribunals will be formed by three full members, of which at least two will be external to the University of Castilla-La Mancha. The appointment of the examining board, made by the International Doctoral School at the proposal of the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, will include three substitutes.

Experts for the pre-evaluation (2):

They must prove research experience through the possession of at least one period of recognized research activity (six-year period) if they are legally able to apply for it. If the proposed expert is not legally able to apply for recognition of six-year periods or if it is not applicable in his or her case, he or she must prove the required research experience through the authorship of several publications or other relevant results of his or her research, equivalent to those required for the recognition of six-year periods in his or her scientific field.

To considerate the aspects mentioned above and its scientific relationship with the topic of the Thesis to evaluate, the Academic Committee will request and dispose of:

  • Suitability report completed and signed by each evaluator, according to the format provided by the International Doctoral School of the UCLM: Model in Spanish /Model in English.

  • Summarized curriculum vitae of each evaluator, without specific format, indicating the most relevant scientific merits in relation to the subject of the Thesis, especially quality publications (SCI indexed), competitive research projects and doctoral theses supervised.

  • Resolution of granting of sexenios, if applicable, for all teachers/researchers outside the UCLM.

In the case of the international doctorate, the criteria established for this purpose by the regulations (Article 20.1.c of the Regulations for Doctoral Studies at the University of Castilla-La Mancha) must also be met.

NUMBER OF COPIES FROM THE DOCTORAL THESIS TO BE DELIVERED:
