25N: MIDECIANT AND NETWORK OF MUSEUMS FOR EQUALITY

Under the slogan “Naming violence is a way of fighting it,” MIDECIANT joins the November 25 campaign, facing head-on all forms of violence that still affect women’s lives.

With this initiative, the RMI and the participating museums aim to “make visible how these forms of violence—physical, symbolic, cultural, or structural—also inhabit heritage narratives and museum practices.” The campaign calls for a collective reflection on the role of art and museums as spaces for change, social awareness, and critical thought.

For this campaign, the project by Carmen Navarrete, Zuekin Inoiz ez (With you, never), created in 2006, was selected.

The museum cannot be complicit in silence: rethinking gender-based violence means rethinking our practices, our images, and our institutions. The work presents a large black canvas held up by metal barriers; on the front we see only the black canvas, while on the back the phrase “Zuekin Inoiz ez (With you, never)” can be read. Below, newspaper headlines about sexist murders and assaults are reproduced. A wall that confronts viewers with the harsh reality of violence against women and the silence surrounding it.
