Spanish language course for Erasmus students of the UCLM
ACADEMIC YEAR 2012/2013 - 2nd semester

11 February to 13 March 2013
(Enrollment: 3 December al 31 January 2013 - Placement test: 6 February)

ULCM offers a Spanish course to Erasmus and other students in the campuses of Albacete, Cuenca, Ciudad Real and Toledo. The course is managed by the University General Foundation.

Why taking this course?

Because it is very important for an Erasmus students who wants to make the most of his/her stay. Spanish course will provide students with a linguistic support parallel to their academic training. The professors, who are specialists in teaching Spanish as a foreign language, will deal with students' difficulties in the classroom by tackling different communicative skills. In addition, students will have the change to add 3 ECTS credits to their academic record.

Course information

Levels

The course consists of several levels depending on the number of people enrolled. Levels are named according to the Common European framework for languages (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2). Each level will need a minimum of 21 students.

Erasmus students who took and passed the same course during the first semester (September-October) can enroll for this second course as well, but always in the next higher level.

Academic details

The course consists of 38 contact hours distributed into five weeks (plus two hours for the placement test), lessons are taught from Monday to Thursday, two hours each afternoon (the exact times will depend on the level assigned to each student, probably 4 to 6 PM or 6 to 8 PM, with no possibility of being more specific now. The course follows the recommedation of the common European framework for languages and is divided into several skills (among which grammar competence, as well as conversation, listening comprehension and other activities).

The student will get 3 ECTS credits as long as he has passed the course and has attended 80% of all lessons. The student will get a certificate that will be delivered by the Offices of International Relations in each campus.

Enrollment and payment

Enrollment is open from 3 December to 31 January. In order to enroll for the course, it is very important to fill in the form next.

The price of the course is 60 euros per student. Payment must be made by bank transfer in euros to the following account number (indicating, as concept, "ERASMUS + STUDENT'S NAME").

No student can begin the course if that amount has not been paid in due time.

On 6 February a placement test will be carried out (hour and classroom to be determined). Before the course students will be informed about which level they have been placed in.

Levels of reference (Common European Framework for Languages)

Level Description
A1 Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
A2 Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.
B1 Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
B2 Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
C1 Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
C2 Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations.
