Cuenca: An academic and cultural destination | The university of castilla-la mancha
In this privileged setting the University of Castilla-La Mancha plays an important role in providing a cultural space for the interplay of new ideas and proposals. The University was founded in 1982, with autonomous status since 1985, and stands out for being a young yet highly qualified university.
The UCLM infrastructure provides lecture halls, laboratories and libraries with an excellent student/reading-post ratio. The majority of its students are from the Castilla-La Mancha region, although there are also many students from other regions who have chosen to pursue their higher education studies with us. The advantageous lecturer/student ratio also contributes in being able to provide an excellent quality of education at tertiary level.
One of the most notable aspects of the University is the personalised attention each student receives, together with practical training and full immersion in ICT. The UCLM has made valuable contributions to Spanish scientific research, being one of the universities which most progress has made in this field. This standard of research has enabled it to successfully become involved in applied research for the regional development of the businesses and administration of Castilla-La Mancha.
For the Spanish as a Foreign Language Programme (ESPACU) the University offers exceptional facilities in the heart of the historic part the city, adapted to meet the demands of the 21st century. The head office of ESPACU is right beside the thirteenth century gothic Cathedral, and the international residence halls are in the House of the Demandadera, a wonderful Carmelite Convent. Dating from the seventeenth century, the building was originally conceived of for the community of Carmelite Nuns, and is one the most beautiful and original of the large houses in Cuenca. It was designed to enclose three main parts: the convent, the House of the Demandadera and the church, and the result is an interestingly complex and irregular layout. The UCLM has completely refurbished the building, and it now houses the Antonio Pérez Foundation, a residence and an exhibition hall.
