In the Middle Ages, the Escuela de traductores de Toledo was a space dedicated more to production and translation than to functioning as a training centre. It was a place where scientific, philosophic and literary works were converted from Arabic into Latin and Castilian. Today, in the spirit of recuperating the fruitful experience of its homonymous medieval predecessor, the new School has launched various translation programmes for the translation of texts. These span from a rich legacy of classics to the contemporary works of Arabic civilization.
Through a variety of collections, the Escuela de traductores de Toledo makes the following materials available to readers: minutes of symposiums and meetings that are periodically organized by the School, as well as research project results and translated works in the framework of the diverse programmes that it promotes or participates in.
The publications service of the University of Castilla-La Mancha publishes the Escuela de traductores de Toledo collection, in which the minutes and research of the School appear. The translations, conducted or supervised by translators at the School, are published in conjunction with private publishers such as Ediciones del Oriente y del Mediterráneo or Trotta.
At the end of the past 20th century, between 1990 and 2000, only 0,08% of almost one hundred thousand publications translated into Spanish were works that had been translated from Arabic. The School of Toledo´s translation programmes such as Memorias del Mediterráneo, Arabic Classics or Moroccan Literature and Thought attempt to alleviate this situation to the best of its capabilities. Year after year, it puts forth new titles, which are likely to encourage a deeper and better knowledge of intellectual production in the Mediterranean region.
Concurrently, the Escuela de traductores de Toledo produces an array of booklets on translated literature and reports on translatable texts, which are available to translators and publishers. Tools such as glossaries, bibliographies, reading notes, translator repertoires, sectoral reports by country, genre, etc, are also made accessible.
