Header of Health Insurance

Students from EU countries have a right to medical treatment at clinics and hospitals ascribed to the Spanish Social Security system. In order to use this service, Erasmus or other international EU students should bring their E-128 or E-111 (European Health Insurance Card) which can be obtained at the corresponding medical offices in their country of origin.

Students from non-EU countries should consult their medical insurance company on the procedure to follow or contract a private insurance policy upon their arrival in Spain.

Assigning a doctor

  • If you require medical attention you should take form E-128/E-111/ European Health Insurance Card to the health clinic nearest to your place of residence. There you will be assigned a doctor.
  • Before visiting the doctor you should make an appointment by phone at the corresponding health clinic.
  • If you are in need of a specialist, you should see your usual doctor first. S/He will arrange for an appointment with a specialist.
  • In the case of dental problems, the Spanish Social Security only covers tooth extractions. If you require other dental treatment you will need to resort to a private dentist and pay for all costs incurred.
