This School was founded in the reign of Charles III by the 14th July 1777 order in council, being their first studies on underground Geometry and minerallurgy, making use of the progress and technical character of the mines of Almaden. This School was directed by D. Enrique Cristobal Störr, who was the mine director at that time .The first name of the school was Academy of Mines . It was the third in Europe, because the first in Freiberg (Sajonia) and the second in San Petesburgo ( Russia ) were created ten years before in 1775.
In 1785 its studies were extended and a new building, suitable for that time, was built. In that building apart from studying, the students lived there in a boarding system. In that time many good students and teachers are taught in this school. Fausto E´lhuyar, wolfram discoverer and Andrés Manuel del Río discoverer of vanadio, both of them took the most innovative mining methods to the New World .
For the first time in 1785 logarithm calculus is applied in Spain to solve problems with the study of underground geometry.
The Engineers School removed to Madrid in 1830. The Academy in Almaden remained as The School of Mines Overseers, guided by the 1841 regulations. After that this school, would be The School of Professionals of Mining and Minerallurgic and Metallurgic manufacturers.
By the 20 th June 1962 order in council, the name of the school changed to School of Mining Technicians and Minerallurgic and Metallurgic manufacturers.
These studies were guided by 1957 laws and at that time, the branches Mining, Metallurgy and I ron and Steel Industry and Electric Installations in Mines and Manufactures, were assigned to this school.
By the 1964 law, the school is the new School of Mining Technical Engineering and in the course 1964-1965, all students from the 1957 plan, were adapted to the new studies.
The new branches were: Mines exploitation, Mining Electromechanic and Iron and Steel Industry and Minerallurgic Manufactures.
By a ministerial decree in September 1967, a new branch is assigned to the school: Fuels and Explosives Installations, being cut out the old branch Mining Electromechanic.
By the decree 148/1969, the names of the different branches are established: Mining Exploitation, Metallurgy and Fuels and Explosive Installations.
Applying the General Education Law in 1970, the experimental plan is taught with the following branches.
By the decree 1377/1972 this school, is integrated in the Polytechnic University of Madrid.
By the decree 1848/1972 of June the school is called University Polytechnic School of Mining and Industrial Engineering, depending on The Polytechnic University of Madrid.
In 1978-79, the Industrial studies started in the school the following branches:
From October in 1985, by the decree 717/1985, The University Polytechnic School is included in The University of Castilla – La Mancha .
At present and from 1999-2000 courses the new Educational Plans have been established and these are the six degrees taught in this school:
