Enrique Castillo, Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Cantabria and founding member of the Royal Academy of Engineering in Spain, turns 60 on October 17, 2006. Professor Castillo is a leading figure in several mathematic and engineering fields, having made seminal contributions in subfields including geotechnique, statistics, bayesian networks, neuronal networks, functional equations, artificial intelligence, linear algebra, optimization methods, numerical methods, reliability engineering, and sensitivity analysis and its applications. With 29 doctoral students, more than 154 publications in international journals, more than 147 publications in conferences, 13 books in english and 15 books and monographs in spanish, Professor Castillo has served as teacher and mentor to engineers and mathematicians throughout the world ( http://personales.unican.es/castie/ ). This conference is intended to be a tribute to the care with which he has nurtured mathematics, engineering, engineers and mathematicians. The University of Castilla-La Mancha in conjunction with the University of Cantabria, organizes the conference in the Civil Engineering School of Ciudad Real (Spain).
